Help & FAQ
Short answers about starting a tree, sharing it, and keeping your data safe. You don’t need an account to read this page.
1. Create a tree or import one
Choose “Create a family tree” on the homepage, or import an existing tree from a GEDCOM or Mishpacha backup file.
2. Add relatives, names, and dates
Names work in Hebrew and English, and dates in the Gregorian or Hebrew calendar.
3. Invite family members or print a copy
So the tree doesn’t live only on your screen — share it with relatives or print it for family gatherings.
How do I start a tree or explore the example?
Choose “Create a family tree” to start your own, or “Explore an example” to try a sample family first. The example is disposable: changes reset when you leave, and nothing is saved to any account. A tree you create without signing in is saved in this browser only — create an account to store it safely in the cloud and open it on other devices.
Can I use Hebrew and English names, and how do I switch languages?
Yes. Every name field accepts Hebrew and English, with automatic right-to-left layout and an on-screen Hebrew keyboard. Switch the whole interface between Hebrew and English from the header — your data stays the same either way.
How do Hebrew/Jewish dates work?
Enter a date in the Gregorian or the Hebrew calendar; the conversion is automatic. The conversion applies the after-sunset rule for events that happened after nightfall, and year-only dates (for example, just “1893”) are fine. If a date has two possible readings, the app asks you to pick one.
Which import and export formats are supported, and what are their limitations?
Import accepts GEDCOM (.ged) files and Mishpacha JSON backups. You always see a preview and a list of issues before importing, and importing replaces the current tree — download a backup of the current tree first. GEDCOM is a standard interchange format, so some details specific to Mishpacha may be lost in transfer; the preview tells you what will be omitted. Export offers five formats: a lossless Mishpacha JSON backup, GEDCOM for other genealogy programs, CSV for spreadsheets, plain text, and a read-only HTML file. When exporting, you can hide dates, places, and notes for living people (names and relationships are always included).
How do I invite relatives, choose view/edit access, or remove access?
In a cloud tree, open “Manage access” and invite relatives by email. Each person gets a role: Viewers can only view the tree, Editors can add and edit people, and the Owner manages members and access. You can change a role, remove a member, or revoke a pending invitation at any time. A tree saved only in your browser can’t be shared — migrate it to the cloud first.
How do I print the tree or download a copy?
Print the entire tree or a section — a focus person with chosen numbers of generations above and below — on A4, Letter, A3, or larger pages, either tiled across multiple pages for a home printer or as a single large poster page. You can also download a PDF, and optionally hide living relatives from printouts. For a copy of the data itself, use Export.
How do I know changes have saved, and what should I do if saving fails?
Cloud trees save automatically as you edit; the header shows Saved, Saving…, Unsaved — retry, or Conflict — reload. If saving fails, press the indicator to retry. If the browser closes before saves complete, the app offers to restore your unsaved changes the next time you open that tree. A tree saved only in your browser is written to the browser automatically — but clearing the site’s data in your browser deletes it, so keep a JSON backup of anything important.
How do I recover account access?
On the sign-in page, choose “Forgot password?” and we’ll email you a reset link. New accounts also need to confirm their email address before signing in. If you no longer have access to your email inbox, contact us.
How do I delete a tree or my account?
Delete a tree from its settings: this permanently erases its people, photos, and history for every member, and cannot be undone — download a backup first. Delete your account from your profile: for each tree you solely own, you choose a new owner or erase the tree. Deletion is immediate and permanent; there is no undo.
How do I convert a Hebrew date outside the tree?
Use the Hebrew date converter on the site: enter a Gregorian date to get its Hebrew date, or pick a Hebrew date to get the Gregorian one. The same conversion runs inside the tree editor when you enter dates, including the after-sunset rule.
